More than 500 residents of Lowar-Ta Community in Kpaai District, Bong County, are reportedly facing a worsening safe drinking water crisis.
The crisis has made local officials warned that the failure of several hand pumps has forced families to depend on potentially “unsafe creek water.”
Assistant Town Chief for Welfare Y. Quaie, and Community Secretary, Danelson Quie said, approximately 90 households are severely affected by the lack of reliable access to safe drinking water.
They described the situation as an urgent public health concern requiring immediate intervention.
Of recent, three hand pumps constructed with support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have become nonfunctional.
The situation has left residents with only one remaining pump that is itself reportedly in poor condition.
They said, the breakdown of the pumps has created serious difficulties for families, who need water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and other daily activities.
With the community’s water infrastructure deteriorating, residents are reportedly being forced to travel to a nearby creek to collect water for household use.
The Lowar-Ta leaders said, immediate intervention would not only provide relief to struggling families, but could also protect public health.
They warned that without urgent action, the community water, and sanitation challenges could continue to expose residents to unnecessary hardship, and health risks.
