LNP Probes ‘Repeat Offender’
…Links Suspect To 2023 Arrest
The leadership of the Liberia National Police (LNP) said it is “actively investigating a suspect for impersonating as a police officer,” a crime he was previously arrested for in 2023.
This repeated conduct, according to the LNP, classifies the suspects as a recidivist (someone who persistently engages in criminal behavior despite prior arrests).
On Sunday night, August 17, 2025, the suspect, dressed in full LNP uniform, like others in the Red-Light catchment communities, was hit by an unknown vehicle near the Vamoma checkpoint.
The victim, a fake police officer, was rushed to JFK Medical Center for treatment. From the hospital, it was discovered that the victim was not a legitimate police officer, but was carrying a fake police identification card (ID card) bearing the name Melvin D. Swen, with the rank of an inspector.
During questioning, the suspect also provided the name Melvin D. Swen, claiming residence in Matadi Estate.
However, investigators have uncovered links to another identity: Cornelius D. Neville, reportedly of Cow Factory, Jamaica Road. The LNP is meanwhile, working to verify his true biological identity.
While the investigation is ongoing, the suspect remains under medical supervision, but will face formal charges upon recovery.
“The LNP reminds the public that impersonating law enforcement is a serious offense, and urges citizens to report any suspicious activity.”
