The Liberia National Police (LNP) has arrested a commercial taxi driver, and seized a large bag of suspected marijuana.
The incident occurred during a routine highway inspection in Salala District, Bong County.
The incident occurred when police officers stopped a commercial vehicle (TX10306) as part of a highway inspection.
According to police, officers discovered a large bag containing suspected marijuana inside the vehicle.
The driver was subsequently taken into custody as investigators began into the circumstances surrounding the transportation of the suspected narcotics.
Police said, preliminary information provided by the driver indicates how he had reportedly been asked by another individual to transport the bag to a vendor in Red Light, Paynesville.
The vendor was reportedly the intended recipient of the package, which the driver said, had allegedly been purchased.
However, the driver reportedly denied knowing what was inside the bag.
According to police, he told investigators that he had been informed that the package contained a used clothe.
The driver admitted how he agreed to transport the package without knowing that it contained marijuana.
Police have not disclosed the identity of the person who allegedly gave the package to the driver, nor have authorities confirmed whether the so-called recipient in Paynesville has been contacted, or arrested.
LNP said, its investigation remains focused on establishing the origin of the suspected marijuana, its intended destination, and whether additional individuals were involved in its transportation.
Investigators are also expected to determine whether the driver knowingly participated in the transportation of the suspected narcotics, or was unaware of the contents of the package.
The marijuana has been taken into police custody as evidence while the investigation continues.
