Koon Pledges Support To Reconstruction Of LICPA HQ
By Fiona Benson Kollie
House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon on Monday, August 17, visited the headquarters of the Liberia Institute of Certified Public Accountants (LICPA) in Congo Town.
Koon’s visit followed an invitation from the professional accounting body.
Koon is a professional accountant himself. He used the visit to assess the institutional challenges.
One of the major concerns raised by LICPA officials was the urgent need to reconstruct its headquarters. Saying: “though the building is owned by the institution, it is currently in a deplorable condition, with visible cracks in several parts of the structure. The condition has created a need for support to construct a new, and safer headquarters that can adequately accommodate its operations.”
In response, Koon pledged to intervene by advocating for the institution, including efforts to secure money for the reconstruction.
He said, his background as an accountant, coupled with his current position as Speaker of the House of Representatives, places him in a position to address the concerns of the accounting profession.
Koon’s visit underscores the importance of strengthening the accounting institutions, and to create a suitable environment for professionals responsible to promote financial accountability, and transparency.
He revealed how the importance of strengthening LICPA is necessary, “because the entity is the statutory professional, and regulatory body that regulate the accountant profession.”
LICPA is responsible for setting accounting, and auditing standards, licensing qualified accountants, and firms, promoting professional development, and ensuring compliance with professional, and ethical standards.
