Koffa, Associates Labeled Persons Of Interest In Arson Attack

The Liberia National Police (LNP) has formally communicated with the House of Representatives regarding its ongoing investigation into the recent fire incident at the Capitol Building. In a letter addressed to House Speaker, Richard Nagbe Koon and read in plenary by Deputy Chief Clerk, Comicks Chea on Thursday, January 23, during the 4th-day sitting of the 1st Quarter of the 2nd Session, the LNP extended its highest regards to the legislature and acknowledged the significant impact of the unfortunate fire on the nation’s legislative activities and cultural heritage. The LNP disclosed that, as part of its efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident, several persons of interest have been identified. Among these individuals are members of the House of Representatives, including:

  1. Hon. J. Fonati Koffa
  2. Hon. Saah Foko
  3. Hon. Abu B. Kamara
  4. Hon. Dixon W. Seboe
  5. Hon. Priscilla A. Cooper
  6. Hon. J. Marvin Cole
  7. Hon. Jacob C. Debee

The police emphasized their commitment to conducting a professional and transparent investigation, ensuring that the rights of all individuals are respected throughout the process. In the communication, the LNP requested a meeting with the identified representatives to discuss the terms and framework for their participation in the investigation. The police also assured the House of Representatives of their willingness to provide any necessary support to facilitate a smooth and effective investigative process. Following the reading of the LNP’s communication, a motion was proffered by Maryland County Electoral District #2 Representative Anthony Williams to forward the communication to the House leadership. Meanwhile, the leadership of the House of Representatives affirmed its belief in the rule of law and expressed its commitment to cooperating fully with the Liberia National Police. The House leadership stated that it will work closely with the police to ensure due process and the dispensation of justice. The Liberia National Police and the House of Representatives remain united in their commitment to addressing this matter of national importance and ensuring that similar incidents are prevented in the future. At the same time, former Speaker Koffa response to the LNP invitation for investigation states: “I understand that by a communication to the House of Representatives majority bloc, the Liberia National Police has invited me and others to assist in the investigation of the fire incident.  Since the unfortunate occurrence of this event, I have consistently cooperated and ensured the cooperation of all persons under my employ.  I must reiterate that I am and remain absolutely innocent of any involvement in this event. I again encourage the authorities to seek international partners’ assistance to ensure a fair and impartial investigation.”
