‘‘Hunger Is Killing Us’’ -Grand Bassa Elderly Residents Cry Out

Elderly residents of the Old Folks Home in central Buchanan are reportedly grappling with severe hunger and sub-standard living conditions, thus calling on the government for immediate help. In interviews with reporters on Tuesday, the residents expressed  difficulties in securing enough food, which is negatively affecting their health.  Elderly individuals such as James Zuahgar, Esther Ben, Gladdy Yeabaye, and Joseph James often go to sleep with only breadfruit and farina for nourishment. They are pleading for urgent assistance from the government and humanitarian organizations to meet their basic food needs. Besides the lack of adequate meals, the residents also face a shortage of essential items like mattresses. Many are left with no choice but to sleep on the floor, aggravating their health issues. Additionally, the home experiences complete darkness every night due to the absence of electricity. “Our government has abandoned us. This is how we are being treated,” they lamented. The residents, who are between the ages of 60 and 70, are part of a group of around 21 elderly individuals residing at the facility.
