House supports Integrity Measures
The House of Representatives (HOR) has vehemently denounced what it called ‘baseless and misleading story published by the Heritage Newspaper in its Monday edition dated June 17, 2024, volume #27. The headline in question reportedly ‘grossly’ misrepresented the actions and commitments of this esteemed legislative body regarding integrity measures. “Contrary to the erroneous claims made by the Heritage Newspaper, the House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, has diligently pursued and implemented crucial integrity measures,” the House has noted. “Specifically, the House had already sanctioned the engagement of APEX, an independent auditing firm, to conduct a thorough audit of personnel and payroll systems audit,” the House also indicated. It continued: “Furthermore, in March of this year, the House authorized the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to initiate a comprehensive system review audit, marking a significant step towards enhancing transparency and accountability within our legislative processes.” It further said: “It is regrettable that the Heritage Newspaper, despite having an accredited reporter at the House of Representatives, failed to verify these critical developments before publishing its misleading report. At no point did Deputy Speaker Hon. Thomas P. Fallah or any other member attempt to obstruct these essential audits.” The House of Representatives then urged the Heritage Newspaper, as well as all media outlets, to uphold the principles of responsible journalism by ensuring the accuracy and credibility of their reporting; adding, “Upholding public trust is paramount, and accurate dissemination of information plays a pivotal role in achieving this goal.” The House of Representatives reiterated its unwavering commitment to fostering good governance and transparency for the betterment of our nation and its citizens; adding that, “Integrity measures such as those undertaken underscore our dedication to serving the interests of the people with diligence and accountability.”
