House Passes Amended  Alien, Nationality Law By: Feona Benson Kollie

Following series of debates on whether or not dual citizenship  is  the best option for Liberia in  these crucial times , the House of Representatives on Thursday passed the  amended version of the Alien and Nationality Law of 2022, which accordingly was re introduced by Nimba County District 7 Lawmaker, Musa Hassan Bility.

Representative Bility is the author sponsor of the Bill since February 6, 2024 and submitted same  to the House of Representatives as ‘Summary of Omnibus Bill for Amendment of the Liberia Aliens and Nationality Law of 2022.

It seeks to undertake a much-needed and long-overdue general revision and 

modernization of the laws, particularly with respect to citizenship, immigration and 

naturalization and to provide a policy that is in tune with the current global realities that

takes  Liberia a step forward, especially in view of the crying need for reform in this area and  result in the revision and codification  of Liberian laws relating to immigration, naturalization, and nationality. 

He added that the proposed amended version seeks to update the table of contents as necessary, replace secretary with Minister throughout, replace secretary of state with Minister of Foreign Affairs throughout, reconcile the use of Minister of Justice and Attorney General throughout, ensure current positions and names of Ministries are fixed throughout, change references of male gender to male/female gender throughout: “woman” to “man and woman”;“mother” to “mother and father”;“his” to “his/her”., add new section on Extradition –is there an existing law?

Representative Bility also said with the passage of the bill, Liberians will have the right to move about freely and maintain the citizenship as well. 

The Nimba County District 7 Lawmaker further revealed that with the passage of this law, Liberians who are seeking greener pastures in other countries will stay have the right to contribute their quota to the country.

He also said the bill, if passed into law, will bring many benefits to Liberia and according to him, it  will improve the living conditions of Liberians across the country. 

He, at the same time, commanded his colleagues for the support and urged  members of the Liberian Senate to do likewise for the betterment of the country.
