Grand Kru Nearing First County Prison Facility

For more than four decades, Grand Kru County has operated without a dedicated prison facility since its creation in 1984, a longstanding gap in the county’s justice and correctional infrastructure that authorities are now seeking to address.

The development has come as construction of a new Grand Kru County Prison Facility continues in Barclayville City, with the first phase of the project already completed.

The completed phase includes the fencing of the prison compound. According to the contractor, six units will be constructed within the compound as the project advances into its next phase.

The facility is expected to strengthen the county’s correctional system, improve the security and management of inmates, and reduce the longstanding dependence on correctional facilities outside the county.

The absence of a dedicated prison facility has remained a major challenge for Grand Kru since the county was established in 1984. The ongoing construction therefore represents more than a new infrastructure project; it marks a significant development in the county’s justice system after decades of waiting.

The project is being implemented as part of broader efforts by the Boakai-Koung Administration to strengthen the rule of law, improve public safety, and expand critical government infrastructure across Liberia.

During a visit to the project site, officials expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far and acknowledged the work of the Ministry of Justice, the contractor, and other stakeholders involved in advancing the project.

With fencing now completed, attention has shifted to the construction of the six planned units and the eventual completion and operationalization of the facility.

For Grand Kru County, the successful completion of the project would mark a historic milestone: the establishment of a dedicated county prison facility after more than four decades without one.

As the work continues, residents are expected to closely follow the project’s progress, particularly its timely completion and eventual opening to support the county’s justice and public safety needs.
