Government has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to safeguarding press freedom and fostering the growth of a vibrant, independent media sector.

Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah gave the assurance during the national celebration of World Press Freedom Day, held on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at the Monrovia City Hall.

Piah, who spoke on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s administration, declared the government’s full support for free speech and independent journalism, recognizing the media as one of the country’s vital pillars of democratic progress.

“The Boakai-led government remains fully committed to working alongside the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) to strengthen the media sector,” Mr. Piah said.

“We believe in responsible journalism, and view the PUL as a crucial partner in promoting professionalism, accountability and ethical media practices.”

Piah also emphasized the role of veteran journalists in mentoring the next generation of reporters, calling on senior media professionals to lead efforts aimed at improving journalistic standards across the country.

“The older professionals should be the face of the Press Union’s activities by guiding and supporting emerging journalists to ensure the media remains a credible and respected force in society.”

Abdullah Karama, Acting Chairperson of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), who underscored the importance of journalism in a nation-building.

“Journalism,” Kmra said, “is an engine of national development.”

“The LTA stands ready to collaborate with the Press Union to provide digital training and resources that will empower journalists to thrive in this evolving media landscape.”

Kamara pledged the LTA’s commitment to helping journalists enhance their digital capacity, recognizing the essential role of technology in modern journalism.

The event brought together media practitioners, government officials, civil society actors, and international partners in a united call for press freedom and journalist safety.

It was held under the global theme: “Sustaining Independent Journalism and Press Freedom in the Digital Age.”

The Press Union of Liberia joined the international media community in observing the day, urging stakeholders to protect the independence of the press amid growing threats from misinformation, digital manipulation, and political interference.

The PUL called on the government, civil society, development partners, and the Liberian public to support policies and initiatives that promote freedom of expression, enhance media safety, and build resilience in the journalism sector.
