At long last, residents of Sasstown and surrounding communities are expected to benefit from a modern health facility, as the German Government received high commendation for the massive progress made at the Dono Nimene Memorial Health Hospital in Sasstown Down-Beach.

The new facility, funded by the German Government through its implementing partner, began construction during the administration of former President George MannehWeah.

Although the project experienced delays for reasons not fully disclosed, construction has now gained significant momentum, marking a major transformation in the area’s healthcare infrastructure.

The DonoNimene Memorial Hospital, also known locally as the Domo Nimene Maternity Hospital or simply the Sasstown Hospital, is located in Upper Sasstown, Grand Kru County.

Since its elevation to full hospital status in 2016, the facility has served as the main referral and healthcare center for residents across  Sasstown, and Jloh Statutory District.

During a recent visit to the site, Dr. Flomo Dorbor, Medical Doctor at the Dono Nimene Memorial Hospital, praised the people and government of Germany for their unwavering support and contribution to the health sector in Grand Kru County.

Dr. Dorbor stated that the project, though long overdue, but will bring great relief to the people of Sasstown and its surroundings once completed and turned over to the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Health.

“It will replace the deteriorating tarpaulin structure currently in use and ensure that our citizens receive the healthcare services they truly deserve.”

Also in a chat with  GrandKru County Health Officer, Dr. Learwellie P. Craig II, he commended the progress of the construction but highlighted persistent challenges, especially staffing constraints at the Dono Nimene Hospital.

Dr. Craig underscored the need for the facility to be adequately equipped to provide comprehensive healthcare delivery once operational.

He emphasized the importance of essential medical supplies, diagnostic tools, and life-saving equipment, including hospital beds and stretchers for patient transport and surgical preparation, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, gowns, and face shields, basic medical tools including stethoscopes, thermometers, blood pressure monitors, and syringes, Laboratory equipment such as chemistry analyzers, CBC machines, microscopes, centrifuges, and lab refrigerators.

The Grand Kru County health officer also named other as imaging devices including X-ray and ultrasound machines for maternal and general diagnostics, emergency and surgical equipment such as defibrillators, ventilators, and oxygen supply systems

Dr. Craig further appealed to the German Government and partners to prioritize the installation of modern laboratory and diagnostic equipment not only in Sasstown but also for the Rally Time Hospital in Grandcess, to help strengthen the national healthcare system and expand access to quality medical services.

The Project under the title “Health System Strengthening Project” is implemented by Deutsche Welthungerhilfe through the  KfW program in the Southeastern Region of the country.

KfW is the German government-owned development bank, based in Frankfurt.
