On the Occasion of  this year’s World Press Freedom Day, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Richard N. Koon, has extolled the media for the invaluable services to democracy.

Koon said, as Liberia join the global community in commemorating World Press Freedom Day, he extends warm greetings and profound appreciation to all journalists and media institutions across the country for their “invaluable service to our democracy.”

He also stated that free, independent, and responsible press remains the bedrock of any thriving democratic society.

“In Liberia, the media continues to play a pivotal role in informing the public, promoting transparency, and holding institutions accountable, and also strengthening governance by ensuring that the voices of the people are heard.”

“On behalf of fellow lawmakers of the 55th legislature, I reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the protection of press freedom, and the creation of an enabling environment in which journalists can operate without fear or intimidation. I encourage the media to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, accuracy, and ethical conduct. With the power to inform comes the responsibility to report truthfully, fairly, and in a manner that contributes to national unity and development.”

Speaker Koon particularly commended reporters assigned at the legislature, who he said, “have diligently covered the activities of the House. The reporters’ efforts are to ensure that the people remain informed about the decisions and actions taken on their behalf. As we observe this important day, let us continue to strengthen the partnership between the Legislature, and the media in advancing good governance, transparency, and accountability and together, we can build a more informed, engaged, and democratic Liberia.”
