“We foresee a brighter future for our association based on the present ‘unity’ in our midst. It is our dream to continue these work years ahead depending on the support we will get from the Ministry of Agriculture and other partners,” said Ruth Clay, Chairlady of the Bassa Town Farmers Association.  Youths and women groups of Bassa Town in Lousiana Township have merged to undertake farming activities in the area. The group consisting about forty members and under the banner the Bassa Town Farmers Association on Thursday March 6, 2025, gathered in McGill Town a neighboring community to cultivate of over one acre of farmland mainly for cassava production. According to the group chairperson, the association was established in 2023 for the purpose of community loan savings but has considered 2025 as the first of its kind to venture into agriculture. The head of the association, Stephen F. Korlubah, said they are individual farmers who have reached a unanimous decision to get involve into corporate farming based on growing food insecurity in the wake of high cost of living in the country. He mentioned that the portion of land that is currently being used by the association was acquired through the assistance of a prominent citizen of Mcgill Town as a way of empowering the community to provide more food on the market.  Korlubah disclosed that the association is intending to expand its activities into vegetable and crops production depending on the yield from the current project. Pointing out that resolved to augment their livelihood through expected produce they are to generate from the field. “We have to pay tuitions of our school going children, feed our families and build our homes,” Korlubah said.  Ruth Clay, the women group chairlady of the Bassa Town Farmers Association, also asserted that women of the group have been independently farming to make ends meet for their families. She said females for the past few years have not been relying on gains of their male counterparts’ sustainability. The chairlady highlighted the views and aspirations of the group as carrying out community development initiatives regarding the lack of basic social services.  She said the group empowerment will help a long way for the construction of guest house, children playground, latrines, hand pumps, amongst other initiatives.
