A Timely Move To Rescue Our Natural Resources From Foreign Hands
PRESIDENT JOSEPH NYUMA Boakai has ordered a nationwide crackdown on illegal mining activities and established a special enforcement team to identify, arrest, and prosecute those involved in unlawful mining operations. This is a timely and commendable step toward protecting Liberia’s natural resources.
LIBERIA IS RICHLY endowed with abundant natural resources. Yet, despite this immense blessing, many citizens continue to live in poverty while others reap the benefits of our land. It is difficult to celebrate national unity when the wealth beneath our soil does not translate into improved living standards for the people.
IT IS WORTH recalling that President Boakai recently expressed concern during a Cabinet meeting about the continued exploitation of Liberia’s natural resources by foreign nationals. His concern reflects the frustration of many Liberians who see their country’s wealth leaving its borders while communities remain underdeveloped.
PARTICULARLY TROUBLING ARE reports of foreign companies engaging in activities such as illegal sand mining, rock crushing, and the extraction of other valuable resources, only to sell these same materials back to Liberians at high prices. Such practices raise legitimate concerns about whether the nation’s natural wealth is being managed in the best interests of its citizens.
NATURAL RESOURCES ARE essential to national development. Water, forests, fertile land, minerals, wildlife, and petroleum provide employment, generate government revenue, support agriculture and industry, and contribute significantly to reducing poverty.
WHEN MANAGED RESPONSIBLY, these resources can improve education, healthcare, infrastructure, and the overall quality of life.
HOWEVER, HISTORY HAS shown that natural resources can become a curse rather than a blessing when they are poorly managed, illegally exploited, or diverted through corruption. Without effective oversight, the wealth that should benefit the nation can instead deepen inequality and fuel public dissatisfaction.
THE GOVERNMENT’S RENEWED determination to combat illegal mining should therefore receive the support of all law-abiding citizens. At the same time, enforcement must be carried out fairly, professionally, and in accordance with the rule of law, regardless of whether those involved are Liberians or foreign nationals.
PROTECTING LIBERIA’S NATURAL resources is not solely the responsibility of government. Citizens, communities, civil society, and the private sector all have important roles to play in safeguarding the country’s environmental and economic future.
THE NEWLY ESTABLISHED enforcement team must act with integrity, impartiality, and urgency. If it succeeds in enforcing the law and protecting the nation’s resources, Liberia will take an important step toward ensuring that its natural wealth benefits both present and future generations.
