CMC Castoffs From Opposition Coalition

The Party says, it will not endorse the current draft communiqué or continue in the ongoing process to form the proposed opposition coalition, because the arrangement fails to adequately reflect the objectives for which the CMC was established.

The opposition Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) has rejected opposition coalition. It official, Armstrong Gobac Selekpo has also resigned from the party. Selekpo served as the advisor to Musa Hassan Bility and Senator Samuel G. Kogar respectively.

The party says, it will not endorse the current draft communiqué or continue in the ongoing process to form the proposed opposition coalition.

The party in a press release over the weekend, said, the decision comes after a thorough review of the draft communiqué by the CMC’s national executive committee, national advisory council, and diaspora leadership.

The release added that MCC’s leadership believes that the proposed arrangement, in its current state, fails to adequately reflect the objectives for which the CMC was established, and the new direction it has pledged to the Liberian people.

The party said, any coalition seeking the trust of the Liberian people must first agree on the necessary changes to the system of government, institutions, laws, and political culture.

“CMC cannot abandon its mission by joining an arrangement that does not establish a binding program for constitutional reform, good governance, institutional independence, economic opportunity, and transparent leadership from the outset.”

Meanwhile, CMC has promised to continue its national consultations with citizens, civil society organizations, community leaders, and political parties that share its commitment to a genuine third option.

The release stated that the party aims to gauge whether the Liberian populace is ready to support a new political direction characterized by a distinct governing philosophy and conduct.

CMC says, it respects the right of other political organizations to pursue arrangements they deem appropriate, and requests the same respect in its pursuit of the distinct mandate entrusted to it by its members and supporters.

CMC will meanwhile, persist in its efforts to establish a national third lane committed to transform the constitutional, legal, institutional, and governance systems.
