Bong County residents have presented a petition to the county administration. They called for urgent action to address the rising number of road accidents occurring along major highways, and in communities in every part of the county.
The county Administrative Officer, and Acting Superintendent, Sam B. Elliot, received the petition during a road safety protest concerned citizens organized as they seek greater attention to the growing number of crashes, and fatalities on the roads.
The protest was held in honor of Alaka Zoebaye, and other victims who have lost their lives in road accidents along the Ganta-Gbarnga-Monrovia highway in recent fatal history.
Protesters expressed concern over a disturbing pattern of motor vehicle accidents affecting communities along major transportation routes.
They said, the repeated crashes have resulted in deaths, injuries, and significant hardship for families, while raising concerns about the safety of passengers, and other road users.
Protesters meanwhile, called for stronger measures to promote responsible driving, and reduce dangerous practices on the highways.
They want relevant government authorities to pay closer attention to traffic violations, and other practices that could contribute to road accidents, including vehicle overloading, and reckless driving.
Elliot, who received the petition, extended condolences to families, who have lost relatives, and loved ones in recent road accidents.
He acknowledged the concerns protesters raised, and emphasized the need for collective responsibility to address road safety challenges.
Elliot: “Preventing road accidents cannot be left solely to government institutions, or law enforcement authorities.”
For that, he urged citizens, drivers, passengers, and other road users to play an active role to promote safety.
Elliot called on members of the public to report dangerous driving practices to the appropriate authorities, particularly cases involving reckless driving, vehicle overloading, and other traffic violations.
He also stressed the importance of drivers exercising caution, and respecting traffic regulations to protect the lives of passengers, pedestrians, and other motorists.
The petition comes amid continuing concerns about road safety along the Ganta-Gbarnga-Monrovia corridor.
