Harper District Representative Mike Jurry has donated L$500,000 to establish a revolving loan fund for low-income employees of William V.S. Tubman University, aimed at easing financial pressure on the school’s lowest-paid staff.
The check was presented on June 9, 2026, during a campus meeting for workers interested in joining a Savings and Lending Club sponsored by Rep. Jurry.
The club has operated in Harper District for over 5 years, supporting businesswomen and low-income workers across Maryland County.
According to him, the fund is specifically for maintenance and support staff earning less than US$170 per month.
He said many of these workers struggle daily to meet family needs due to limited wages.
“This initiative is about giving our people access to small, affordable loans so they can handle emergencies, start small businesses, or support their families without falling into debt traps,” Jurry told staff.
The Savings and Lending Club model allows members to save small amounts, then borrow from the revolving fund and repay with low interest. Rep. Jurry said the Tubman University chapter will follow the same structure that has helped hundreds of women and workers in Harper District since 2021.
Tubman University staff welcomed the intervention, saying it comes at a time when rising costs are making life harder for support staff.
The L$500,000 seed fund will be managed by the club’s leadership, with Rep. Jurry’s office providing oversight to ensure transparency and access for eligible workers.
