Adults in Bardezu Town, Zorzor Administrative District, have welcomed an adult literacy program.

The program has helped community members improve their ability to read, write, calculate, and complete basic documents.

It was introduced in Bardezu in 2025, and has been implemented by the Self-Help Initiative for Sustainable Development (SHIFSD-Liberia).

One of the program’s facilitators, Alexander Z. Tarnue, informed reporters that the learners began with Level One last year, and have now advanced to Level Two, meaning they are progressing.

Tarnue said, the training has already produced noticeable changes among the learners, particularly in their ability to write their names, fill out forms, sign documents, and perform basic calculations.

He explained how the program objective has reduced illiteracy by providing adults, who did not attend formal school with basic education.

Tarnue: “Adults in Bardezu have shown increasing interest in the program, with many participants demonstrating commitment to learn.”

He said, the program initially covered 15 communities, while an additional 15 communities have been included as part of the improvement.

Tarnue has meanwhile, recalled how Bardezu was among the best-performing literacy circles in the region following the completion of the first level of training last year.

He said, the current class has 30 learners, comprising both males and females, with women currently making up the majority of the students.
