The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has called for a new generation of ethical, inclusive, and action-oriented leaders as the Young Political Leadership School Africa (YPLS Africa) Cohort 13 officially opened in Monrovia. UNDP Resident Representative in Liberia, Aliou Mamadou Dia delivered the keynote goodwill remarks at the opening ceremony. Dia said, Africa’s transformation depends on the leadership choices of its young people. “Young people are not just beneficiaries of development; they are its drivers. You are not the leaders of tomorrow; you are the leaders of today.”  The program enrolled over 150 emerging young political and civic leaders from across Africa. Mr. Dia said, with more than 70 percent of the continent’s population under the age of 30, Africa stands at a defining moment.  He challenged participants to embrace values-based leadership. “Leadership is defined by integrity, accountability, transparency, and service. These are not abstract ideals; they are the foundation of progress.”  Dia further said, inclusive governance and youth participation are essential to strengthen democratic institutions. He noted that development succeeds when institutions are strong, inclusive and trusted by the people.

Backing the Vision with Action: YPLS Africa Cohort 13

The call to action comes as Liberia hosts the 13th Cohort of the Young Political Leadership School Africa, a flagship initiative designed to bridge the gap between youth potential and political leadership. Held from June 8–13, 2026, under the theme: “Empowering the Future: From Learning to Leadership for Africa’s Agenda 2063.”  The program brought together young leaders for intensive training in governance, ethical leadership, civic engagement and digital democracy.  Despite Africa’s youthful population, they remain significantly underrepresented in decision-making, with less than three percent of parliamentarians under 30.  YPLS Africa is therefore, addressing the gap by: equipping participants with political knowledge and practical leadership skills; ethical grounding to navigate complex governance systems; tools for policy influence and civic engagement, mentorship and long-term leadership support.

Since the program was established in 2016, it has trained over 1,200 young leaders, many of whom now serve in government, political parties, and civil society.
