Police in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, are said to have arrested and subsequently detained, Ruth Nimely, 20, after admitting to stealing over L$2,076,000 from her mother’s coffer.

Ruth’s mother, not named, is the head of fishmongers, whose money she kept at her residence.

Ruth, a resident of Big Fanti Town, reportedly confessed to stealing the money from where her mother had them kept. According to sources, she admitted spending the stolen funds on a bed she bought at the valued at L$110,000, two iPhones, and financial support for her boyfriend (not named).

All the victims are members of the “Fish for Living Organization,” a predominately women-led community savings group made up primarily of fishmongers from the Big Fanti Town area.

Members of the group are now left in distress over the loss. It is reported that some members had contributed to the savings pool for over four years.

The alleged theft comes just weeks before the group’s scheduled annual savings distribution in September, amplifying the impact on the members, some of who relied on the payout to improve their business outlays.

The affected women have meanwhile, called on the police for swift investigation that would retrieve the money.

They have also appealed to the police to recover the funds, and ensure justice is served.
