Opposition Alternative National Congress (ANC) political leader, Alexander Benedict Cummings says, the 2029 presidential election will be his final attempt at seeking for the highest office. Cummings, who spoke during his closing argument, said he has to be realistic about his political future, and will not be angry with Liberians over their choices at the polls.
“2029 is my last go-round. I have to be realistic, and I’m not going to be vexed with Liberians.”
Cummings has contested the presidency in previous elections, and remains a major opposition figure. His latest comments suggest that he sees the 2029 election as an important final opportunity to present his vision to the voters.
Cummings also said: “Whatever decision Liberians make at the polls; I will respect it.”
He meanwhile, called on political leaders to accept the choice of the people.
Cummings’ statement comes as political parties, and potential presidential candidates begin looking ahead to the 2029 elections.
Cummings’ Political Journey to end 2029
He signals resignation from politics if he’s not elected 2029 as president.
Cummings vowed not to participate in any political election if he doesn’t get elected as president. “If Liberians do not see it necessary to elect me after years of explaining my vision for Liberia, I will have no option, but to resign from politics, and contribute to the growth of the country in other ways.”
He noted that if he’s rejected by Liberians, he will not frown at anyone, but will quietly part ways with politics, and observe those who will be entrusted to serve.
Cummings has also said, the 1% awarded to ANC during the 2023 elections was done through electoral malpractices as he believes his party actually exceeded votes the National Elections Commission (NEC) announced.
Background of Cummings’ Political History
He joined Liberian politics in 2016 when he retired from a long executive career at the Coca-Cola Company.
He has contested for the presidency two times (in the 2017 and 2023) on the ticket of the opposition ANC, and as a leader within the collaborating political parties.
