102 Mpox Cases Confirmed, 75 Recovered

The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has confirmed a total of 102 laboratory-tested cases of the Mpox virus in the country. It says, since the beginning of 2024, and with 75 individuals already recovered.

At the regular press briefing at the Ministry of Information on Thursday, May 22, 2025, NPHIL Director General, Dr. Chris Nyan said, “there have been no reported deaths from the virus in the country during this period.”

“Mpox is currently in the country and as an institution, our primary role is to raise public awareness,” Dr. Nyan assured the public.

“This is not a fight for the government alone; it is a collective responsibility of every Liberians.”

He spoke of the sensitivity of confirming and announcing cases of Mpox, noting: “the institute is cautious in its communications to avoid public panic, adding: “We want to make sure that our response reduces fear, not increases it,” he added.

Dr. Nyan disclosed that the country is currently dealing with two strains of the Mpox virus, compared to other countries that are battling three or four types.

He called for calm and reassured the public that health authorities are doing everything possible to contain the outbreak and prioritize the welfare of the people.

“This is a national emergency that affects every Liberian, we are, therefore calling for more resources in the health sector, not just for NPHIL, but for all health facilities across the country,” he said.

Nyan meanwhile, encouraged citizens to remain vigilant, support public health efforts, and not be discouraged, as the government and its partners continue to fight the virus.

Mpox, formerly known as Monkeypox, is a viral zoonotic disease with symptoms similar to smallpox, though typically less severe.
