The Supreme Council for Imams and Mosques Affairs, of Liberia, has broken its silence on the Thursday, November 13, 2025 Red Light, Paynesville eviction violent unrest which led to the assault of an Imam and several other muslims in the area.

In a statement of condemnation and denunciation issued in Monrovia on Thursday, November 20 and read by the chairman of the Supreme Council for Imams and Mosques Affairs, Alhassan A. Kamara, the council expressed its deep regret and strongly condemned the incident that ensured recently during the eviction exercise at Red Light in Paynesville.

The statement voiced by the Supreme Council for Imams and Mosques Affairs described the unrest as painful and represents a serious violation of human and religious values.

The council intimated that during the violent eviction, Imam Abubakar Kamara and other members of the Muslim Community were manhandled by some unidentified individuals in violation of their human rights.

However, the Supreme Council for Imams and Mosques Affairs called on government for a firm stance to ensure respect for the sanctity of places of worship and their servants.

“While we affirm our categorical rejection of such violent acts, we call upon the relevant Liberian authorities to take immediate and just legal measures against those responsible, and to ensure that the injured receive appropriate care and that damages are properly addressed in accordance with the laws in force in the country,” the statement underscored.

At the same time, the Supreme Council for Imams and Mosques Affairs urged all members of the Liberian community, in all its components, to promote the spirit of tolerance and co-existence and to work together in harmony to protect the houses of Allah and those who serve in them from all forms of violence and aggression in Liberia.

“We pray to Allah Almighty to grant speedy recovery to the injured in the November 13, 2025 eviction violence, to conform their families with patience and faith, and to preserve Liberia and its people from all harm,” the statement noted.

Meanwhile, at least twelve (12) persons have been arrested by officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP) following the violent Red-Light eviction episode in Paynesville which also resulted to a court officer sustaining injury.

The twelve individuals, this paper has gathered, were nabbed on Friday, November 14, 2025 by officers of the LNP allegedly in connection with the violent unrest over land ownership that erupted at Red Light, Paynesville, outside Monrovia, have been forwarded to court by authorities of the LNP, to face prosecution.
