LNP Urges Peaceful Assembly, Adherence To Legal Procedures
The Liberia National Police (LNP) said it is aware of discussions surrounding a planned protest by some motorcyclists in Monrovia under the auspices of the Supreme Motorcycle Transport Union of Liberia (SUMTUL) Inc. In light of this, the LNP has reiterated the importance of maintaining peace, upholding the rule of law, and prioritizing the safety of all residents in and around Monrovia. While the LNP recognizes the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful assembly, as enshrined in Article 17 of the 1986 Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, the paramilitary apparatus said it is imperative that any planned protest adheres to the legal framework governing public demonstrations. The LNP, then urged all motorcyclists intending to protest or assemble to formally notify the Ministry of Justice, the statutory authority responsible for maintaining national peace and security, for proper consideration. The LNP assured motorcyclists that once the necessary arrangements are made and approved, the police will fulfill its constitutional duty of ensuring security and safety for both the protestors and the general public. Furthermore, the LNP strongly warned all concerned motorcyclists against engaging in acts of violence, confrontation, or any activities that could disrupt public order. The LNP also encouraged the general public to go about their normal business without fear, promising that the police remain actively engaged with all relevant stakeholders regarding the planned protest.
