The House of Representatives- HOR, has unanimously voted to cite the authorities of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency- LDEA and the Liberia National Police- LNP over the reported public sale of narcotic drugs in Soniewine Community in Monrovia and other parts of Liberia. A release issued by the HOR Press Bureau on Friday, December 13, 2024, said the plenary’s decision was triggered by a communication from Montserrado County District 8 Representative, Prince A. Toles. Representative Toles alleged the alarming issue of open drug sales in the Soniewine Community and other areas of Liberia. “It has come to my attention that the location where drug sales are openly taking place in my district is situated less than 50 feet from the Soniewine public school, where young children are receiving their primary education,” he stated. According to the lawmaker, the situation is deeply concerning as it has the potential to expose children to the risks associated with witnessing drug transactions and drug use in their immediate vicinity. “As we continue our collective efforts in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking, we must take swift action to address this pressing issue,” the lawmaker alerted.  Representative Toles said the proximity of illicit drug sales to the school environment is particularly troubling, as it may normalize and glamorize drug use in the eyes of vulnerable young people.  “We must act decisively to shield our children from such harmful influences that could have lasting detrimental effects on their well-being and prospects,” he maintained. The Montserrado County District 8 Representative sought the presence of the LDEA and the LNP bosses to share insights and propose strategies on how they intend to combat this problem effectively to eradicate open drug sales in our communities.  He stressed the need to ensure the safety of communities and protect children from the destructive impact of drugs and substance abuse. Meanwhile, authorities of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency and the Liberia National Police are expected to appear before the body on Tuesday of next week.
