Woman Arrested Over Fake Ebola Outbreak Claim

Early Saturday morning, May 23, 2026, Liberia’s health authorities issued a strong press release condemning the spread of false Ebola reports circulating on social media, as officials announced the apprehension of Paola N. Bedell, the primary suspect in a disinformation scheme involving a fabricated Ebola outbreak declaration.

According to authorities, she  has been formally turned over to the LNP for full investigation. She is accused of deliberately creating and disseminating false information claiming that Liberia had declared a new Ebola outbreak, triggering unnecessary panic across the country and region.

The Ministry of Health’s press release, issued Saturday morning, stated: “There is currently no Ebola outbreak in Liberia. All official surveillance systems show no confirmed cases. These fake reports are not only false but dangerously irresponsible, as they undermine public trust in health institutions and divert resources from real public health priorities.”

Social media platforms, particularly Facebook, WhatsApp, and X, were flooded in recent days with unverified posts and voice notes falsely attributed to government officials and international health organizations. Some messages claimed that Ebola had returned to Montserrado County and other areas, causing alarm among residents already mindful of the country’s history with the deadly virus.

Health officials noted that the disinformation led to temporary disruptions, including reduced attendance at some health facilities and anxious calls to the Ministry’s hotline. “This kind of misinformation can cause real harm,” the press release continued. “We urge citizens to verify all health-related information through official channels only.”

A senior LNP source, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Bedell is suspected of being the originator or key amplifier of the false narrative. “We are investigating the full scope of this case, including possible accomplices and the motive behind the spread of these dangerous falsehoods,” the source said.

Bedell is currently in police custody pending further interrogation. Authorities have not yet disclosed additional details about her background or potential charges, which may include violations related to cybercrime and public health misinformation under Liberian law.

The Ministry of Health and LNP have called on the public to remain calm and report any suspicious health-related messages to the appropriate authorities. They also encouraged citizens to rely on verified sources such as the official Ministry of Health website, local radio stations, and verified government social media accounts.

This incident comes as Liberia continues to strengthen its disease surveillance systems following past Ebola and COVID-19 experiences. Officials stressed that while vigilance remains high, there is currently no active Ebola threat in the country.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available from the Liberia National Police and the Ministry of Health.
