Nimba County Superintendent, Kou Meapeh Gono, has fired back at Senator Samuel G. Kogar with a tough political statement.
While standing firmly behind her alignment with the ruling Unity Party government, Supt. Gono told Kogar that her legacy was intertwined with that of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
“My legacy in Nimba as Superintendent can never be undermined by siding with the power that be.” In actuality, my legacy cannot be divorced from the Boakai-Koung government. My gains in the county, and Liberia strongly reflect the mandate of the governing Unity Party’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Governance. “As a member of the Executive Branch, I remain unapologetic and intentional in defending and promoting the Boakai-Koung Agenda.
She adds: “The Superintendent of any county is the CEO, arrowhead, or parental figure that ensures the greater good of his or her citizens. But make no mistake, the role of the Superintendent is also a political one. “Therefore, you were right to have said that logically I am far from you. Matter of fact, logically we remain parallel! Hence, acquiesced!”
Supt. Gono’s remarks were in response to recent public commentary, which Sen. Kogar made on her political positioning. On Tuesday, June 28, during a live interview on Radio Voice of Nimba broadcast across multiple stations in the county, Kogar accused the Supt. Gono of using her position to “undermine county leaders.” “Logically, the Superintendent may not be close to me, but mentally, she appears to be. If she keeps taking indirect shots at me, it will not foster unity among Nimbaians. As a mother, I urge her to stay out of our disputes. I am old enough to be her father, and I still regard her like a daughter. Whenever she hears something about any issue, I encourage her to get clarification from all sides before making a judgment.”
Political observers say, the latest exchange signals a continuation of the war of words between the county’s two top officials. The tension dates to late 2025, when a heated clash erupted between Supt. Gono and Sen. Kogar over management of the County Social Development Fund (CSDF). Kogar called for a full audit of Madam Gono’s administration, alleging that portions of the CSDF were misused and diverted from projects in health, education and infrastructure.
Supt. Gono responded forcefully at the time: “Call for your audit! I challenge it. But you will never, I mean never, be Susu Pa for Nimba’s money at County Sittings.” These continued confrontational attacks have raised questions about both local leaders’ commitment to unity, peace and development.
