UP Chair Warns Against ‘Eroding Public Trust’

By Emmanuel Koffa

Grand Kru County Chapter of the ruling Unity Party (UP) is faced with renewed calls for internal accountability.

The situation erupted after the County Chairman, Nelson Tecgeoh Torbor, issued a strongly worded statement underlining oversight, transparency, and party responsibility in the management of public resources.

Rather than focusing solely on political exchanges involving Darius Doe, Torbor’s comments have broadened into a call for self-assessment within the party and county leadership structures.

He called on the Part leadership, not to only engage in politics, but also ensure that governance delivery reflects the expectations of its citizens.

“As a Party, we are under moral obligation to supervise and inquire about governance issues where and when deemed appropriate.”

Torbor expressed concern that despite “regular disbursement of County Development Funds (CDF),” there has been limited public visibility of major development projects or groundbreaking ceremonies under the current county administration led by Superintendent A. Worwlee Nimely.

He warned that such gaps between funding and visible outcomes could damage public confidence in both local leadership and the Party’s broader image.

Torbor referenced past (failed) governance experiences, including development activities during the administration of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, while also recalling his previous criticism of the CDC-led government over perceived shortcomings in county development execution.

However, he insisted his current focus is not political rivalry, but institutional responsibility.

“The objective of my advocacy has never been personal; it is for the supreme benefit of the people of Grand Kru.”

Torbor announced that UP Grand Kru Chapter will soon formally engage county authorities to request a comprehensive update on CDF usage, project implementation, and community impact.

He added that any response will be escalated to the Party’s National Executive Committee and relevant national authorities if necessary.
