The House of Representatives (HoR) Committees on Education and Health, on Friday September 12, 2025, conducted a public hearing on the draft bill seeking to elevate the Tubman National Institute of Medical Arts (TNIMA) into a full degree-granting institution.

The hearing, held in the conference room, brought together stakeholders, including medical practitioners, educators and representatives from key institutions.

Among those in attendance were officials of the Commission on Higher Education, the University of Liberia, the Liberia Nursing and Midwifery Board, the Midwifery Association of Liberia, and authorities of TNIMA.

The Bill was introduced by Augustine B. Chiewolo, Representative of Lofa County Electoral District #5, who noted that TNIMA, established in 1945, has over the decades, produced numerous trained medical practitioners, who continue to serve the nation.

Chiewolo however said, despite its long-standing contributions, the institution only awards diplomas.

He called on his colleagues to elevate TNIMA to a bachelor’s degree-granting status, aligning it with modern educational standards and the country pressing health needs.

Earlier, Representative Nyan Flomo, Chair of the House Committee on Education, welcomed the participants, and highlighted the importance of the deliberations.

Flomo said upgrading TNIMA will not only enhance the institution’s capacity, but also improve the quality of country’s healthcare workforce.

The committees have mandated a sub-committee to continue consultations and review of submissions made during the hearing within two weeks before the joint committee can make a recommendation to the plenary for legislative action on the draft legislation.
