River Gee Farmers Boost Production

By Aaron B. Nemah

Farmers in River Gee County have reaped the benefits of sustained agricultural support and hard work, with vegetable farming experiencing a remarkable surge.

The farmers’ efforts are a significant milestone for the county agricultural activity.

The Smallholder Agriculture Development for Food and Nutrition Security (SADFONS) project, a nationally led initiative supported by international partners, is driving the progress.

Amos Varfly and his wife Rose, are among the leading farmers in Chedepo Jarkaken, a community that has emerged as a hub for fruit and vegetable production.

Their recent cucumber harvest yielded an impressive 50 kilograms, marking a personal success story and showcasing the potential for expanded horticultural production in the county.

Rose Varfly expressed gratitude for the support received from local agricultural authorities and partners, crediting new farming methods, tools, and seeds for their improved yields.

“My husband is a hardworking man who loves farming. It is how we support our children and grandchildren in school.”

River Gee County Agriculture Coordinator, Jasper Sheriff Tweh, praised the farmers’ determination and progress.

Tweh highlighted the SADFONS project’s effectiveness in equipping them with knowledge and resources.

“I am encouraged by the progress farmers are making in my own county, River Gee,” Tweh said.

With continued collaboration and innovation, the county is poised to become a promising center for agricultural growth, reinforcing its reputation as a breadbasket and contributing to the broader vision of agriculture-driven economic transformation.
