The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS), has begun constructing at least 300 latrines across 15 communities, and the rehabilitation of several hand pumps.

The projects aimed at enhancing sanitation in the county.

The benefitting communities include Kayken Community, Picnicess, Ylatwen, Piddy, Nyanbo, Jlaklonken, Small-Suehn-Gbuken, Gblaborken, Karwalaken, Kwaken, Trehn Wutuken, Kladia, Nrokwia, Sloyen, and Dayokpo.

LNRCS Field Officer George Gray, who is overseeing the project, stressed the importance of those facilities during an interview in Barclayville, the political capital.

“Access to proper sanitation is vital for the health and well-being of any community,” Gray stated.

According to him, the provision of the 20 latrines to each of the targeted communities, the LNRCS is not only addressing immediate health concerns, but are also contributing to the broader goal of fostering a cleaner and safer environment.

Gray described the initiatives as “significant step toward improving public health and hygiene in the county buttressing national government efforts, which have been grappling with sanitation challenge.”

He said that each community will receive 20 of the facilities that are designed to promote hygiene and reduce the risk of waterborne diseases.

Mr. Gray said the project is particularly crucial in light of ongoing public health challenges faced by rural areas, adding: “improving sanitation is a key factor in preventing diseases that arise from inadequate waste management.” “We are hopeful that these facilities will lead to a significant reduction in health issues related to poor sanitation.”

The LNRCS, he said, is committed to engage with beneficiaries’ communities to ensure that the facilities are not only built, but also maintained and used effectively.

Some of the residents have meanwhile, expressed their gratitude for the initiatives, recognizing the positive impact they will have on their daily lives.
