A new local non-governmental organization (NGO), the Substantiable Community Actions for Peace and Health Initiative, was officially launched with the aim to leverage health programs that would foster peace in conflict-affected areas.

Marion Subah, the Executive Director of Initiative, spoke of the organization commitment to integrate health interventions into peace-building.

The Initiative is part of a broader Global Health for Peace Initiative that began in 2020, which seeks to utilize the core strengths of health systems to alleviate suffering, and address the root causes of conflict.

“We believe that health programs can not only alleviate suffering in conflict zones, but also serve as instruments to address underlying conflicts,” Madam Subah said.

The Sustainable Community Actions approach is centered around maintaining conflict sensitivity in all humanitarian programming, fostering trust and communication among communities, and collaborating on common health-related objectives.

“By promoting inclusive health initiatives, we aim to improve social cohesion and create a unified front for peace,” Madam Subah added.

while recognizing the current global climate of conflict that affects health and well-being, the Initiative aligns with the goals set forth during the 2022 World Health Assembly, which called for health to serve as a bridge for peace.

“Evidence shows that health interventions can support peace-building, and strengthen the resolve of those negotiating for peace,” Madam Subah noted.

The chief launcher of the program, Dr. Laurine Cooper, said there are approximately 10,000 community health workers.

Dr. Cooper is the Director of County Health Supervisor at the Ministry of Health. He noted that the Initiative has been instrumental delivering vital health services, including maternal and child health, family planning, and nutrition screening.

The launch was attended by key stakeholders from the Ministry of Health and various non-governmental organizations, all expressed supports for the mission of Sustainable Community Actions.

As the Sustainable Community Actions for Peace and Health Initiative embarks on its mission, it aims not only to enhance health outcomes, but also to promote lasting peace in communities.

The organization is poised to play a pivotal role in building a healthier, and more peaceful society for all Liberians.

The launch event featured remarks from Tolbert Nyenswah, former Director of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), who highlighted the critical role of community health workers in combating diseases play, such as malaria, which affects one in every two to three children.

Nyenswah reinforced the importance of utilizing community health workers to enhance access to essential health services.

Community health programs, supported by various stakeholders, have made significant strides in strengthening access to primary healthcare, especially in rural and remote communities.
