NGOs Secure Spot In US$1M Project

By Emmanuel Koffa

Three local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from Grand Kru County have been selected to participate in a nationwide capacity-building initiative.

The initiative is valued at more than US$1 million.  The project has positioned the county among beneficiaries of a major effort to strengthen local organizations for improved governance and social service delivery. The organizations joined representatives of civil society groups from the 15 counties at the official launch of the Supply Chain Capacity Assessment Project (SCAP).

The project is an initiative being implemented through the Liberia NGOs Network (LINNK) with funding from international humanitarian organization Help Logistics.

The Grand Kru organizations include Grand Kru Initiative for Sustainability (GKIS), Youth Alliance for Development (YAD), and another local not-for-profit organization (not named) represented at the launch. The SCAP project is designed to assess and strengthen the institutional and supply chain capacities of local NGOs; enable them to better support governance programs and deliver essential services in their respective communities.

The initiative is expected to benefit approximately 75 local organizations in every part of the country over an 18-month implementation period.

The first phase, budgeted at US$73,000, will run for six months, focusing on supply chain capacity assessments and targeted training for participating organizations.

The project seeks to prepare local NGOs to become stronger, and more effective partners in national development by enhancing their operational systems, accountability and service delivery capabilities. The launch ceremony attracted representatives the European Union (EU), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the National WASH Commission, the Governance Commission, the General Services Agency (GSA), the Ministry of Local Government (MLG), the Ministry of Health (MoH), the LINGO Forum and ECOWAS. Speakers underscored the need to invest in local organizations.

Each one described them as critical partners to advance transparency, accountability and sustainable development.

A representative welcomed Grand Kru’s inclusion in the initiative.

He noted that the strengthened capacity of local organizations will unlock development opportunities and expand support for vulnerable groups, particularly women and youth.
