Concerns are has mounted in Palala, Kpaai District, Bong County, after residents and family members questioned the handling of an alleged rape investigation.
Residents warned that unnecessary delays in the early stages of the case could undermine efforts to establish the truth and deliver justice. The Women and Children Protection Section of the Liberia National Police Bong County Detachment has investigated the case, which has now sparked widespread public concern. Community members said, the incident occurred on Saturday, July 4, involving a woman believed to be about 45 years old and the accused.
Residents alleged that after the woman became intoxicated, a man believed to be in his 50s offered to escort her home, instead, took her to his own residence and sexually abused her, at least three times. Eyewitnesses told reporters that they later heard the woman crying from inside the suspect’s house while the door remained locked.
Alarmed by the cries, residents said, they forced the door opened, and found them virtually naked before they notified the police.
The suspect was initially detained at the Palala Police Depot before being transferred to the Liberia National Police’s Bong County Detachment in Gbarnga for investigation.
However, the investigation has become the subject of intense public scrutiny.
The victim family members said, officers informed them that personnel responsible for conducting the required medical examination at C.B. Dunbar Hospital were unavailable throughout the weekend. As of press time late last night, they said, the woman had still not undergone the examination since the incident. They expressed the fear that the reported delay could compromise the collection of crucial forensic evidence and ultimately affect the outcome of the investigation. For that reason, several residents claimed they later saw the suspect back in Palala from his detention cell; a situation, which has prompted fresh questions about the circumstances surrounding his release. Authorities have not publicly explained whether he remains under investigation, or the conditions under which he was reportedly released.
As of Monday, neither the Liberia National Police, nor the Women and Children Protection Section, had issued an official statement responding to residents’ concerns.
With public anxiety continuing, community leaders have called for a transparent, impartial, and timely investigation to ensure that justice is served and public confidence in the investigative process is maintained.
