In a notable turn of events within the religious landscape, a breakaway faction of the United Methodist Church (UMC), has unveiled a new denomination, the Grand Kru Circuit Global Methodist Church. The launch, which took place in Barclayville Grand Kru County, was held under the theme: “Redeeming the Church from Compromising the Scripture,” signaling a strong stance against the UMC’s deviation from biblical teachings. The launch was celebrated by numerous local congregations, including the 1st Church Global Methodist, C. P. Bellor Global Methodist, Robert S. Doe Global Methodist, Genwin Global Methodist, and the Zoloken Global Methodist churches, the two-day festivities commenced with a vibrant outdoor parade, culminating in a divine worship service at the Barclayville City Hall. Reverend J. Nyanpline Nyeswah, head of the new denomination, characterized the activities as highly significant and fulfilling, embodying the community resolve to uphold traditional values.
The division within the UMC has been exacerbated by ongoing disputes over issues of homosexuality, and what some congregants believe to be compromises to biblical authority.
Rev. Nyeswah explained that their decision to establish the new church was propelled by a growing concern over the denomination endorsement of practices that conflict with scriptural tenets, undermining the church’s mission.
In an interview, Nyeswah called on Christian Community to join their initiative against homosexuality, asserting that such practices are not supported by the constitution, and run counter to Christian values.
The Associate Lay-Leader for the Liberia Annual Conference (LAC) of the GMC, Augustine Krah, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that the GMC exclusively recognizes marriage as a union between “one man and one woman,” firmly rooted in biblical principles.
Krah addressed journalists, detailing the critical disagreements that have led to the split, particularly regarding the UMC evolving stance on marriage and sexual ethics.
He affirmed the GMC steadfast commitment to their beliefs, declaring readiness for any legal challenges arising from their separation.
The current debates around sexuality, and church governance continue to sow discord within the Methodist community, evidenced by the formation of the Grand Kru Circuit GMC, which symbolizes a larger schism unfolding globally.
