In a significant step towards democratic governance, the Mano River Union Youth Parliament, Liberia Chapter (MRUYP-LC), has officially initiated the transition process to its 5th Parliament by constituting an Independent Elections Commission.
In a news conference held over the weekend, the Speaker of the 4th Parliament, Daniel Nama Nills, stated that this move aligns with Rule 35(a) of the revised 2024 statutes, which mandates a parliamentary tenure of four years followed by elections.
Speaker Nills disclosed that the upcoming elections will involve the selection of 30 parliamentarians from across Liberia’s 15 counties, with two representatives chosen from each county.
He further indicated that the transition aims to enhance representation and empower youth participation in the political sphere.
He noted that the initiative is also a bid to ensure transparency and inclusivity. In adherence to the statutes, specifically Rule 35(b), Nills announced the appointment of the Independent Elections Commission to effectively manage and conduct the upcoming parliamentary elections in all 15 counties of Liberia.
The appointed members are Amb. Varney V. Sheriff (Chairperson), Ms. Adela C.A. Johnson (Co-chair), and Adonis W. Yormie (Secretary).
The MRUYP-LC emphasized that these appointments underscore the Parliament’s commitment to the principles of democratic governance and institutional integrity.
Nills noted that the selection of these individuals is based on their extensive experience in peacebuilding, grassroots youth leadership, and understanding of the electoral process.
He explained that their appointment is in accordance with Rule 35(b) of the Statutes, which provides that “the Speaker, in consultation with his two Deputies, shall commission an independent elections commission responsible for overseeing all internal parliamentary polls and ensuring compliance with democratic best practices.
“He also urged interested individuals, youth stakeholders, and the public to lend their full cooperation to the Commissioners as they embark on the vital task of strengthening youth democracy in Liberia.
