The Liberia Intellectual Property Office (LIPO) has marked this year’s World Intellectual Property Day with a call to action.
The event was to transform the sports sector into a commercially vibrant industry driven by strong intellectual property (IP) protections.
It was held under the theme: “Unlocking the Commercial Power of Sport through Intellectual Property in Liberia.”
The celebration brought together a diverse cross-section of stakeholders, including sports administrators, athletes, entrepreneurs and policymakers.
The gathering served as a platform that highlighted how strategic branding, licensing, and legal protection can unlock new revenue streams and elevate the profile of Liberian sports locally and internationally.
LIPO Director General Garmai Koboi, who delivered the keynote address, unveiled a major incentive designed to accelerate compliance and participation within the sector.
Madam Koboi announced a one-month waiver for all sports institutions, granting them the opportunity to regularize their intellectual property status without the usual administrative burdens.
She said, the waiver covers essential registration processes, including trademarks, logos, and other brand assets that define the identity of sports clubs and organizations.
She said, the initiative is not only a relief measure, but a strategic step to build a more structured and competitive sports ecosystem.
“This is an opportunity for sports institutions to take ownership of their brands. By securing their intellectual property, they position themselves to attract sponsorships, expand merchandising opportunities, and strengthen their market value.”
Madam Koboi said, many local sports entities currently operate without formal IP protection, leaving their brands exposed to misuse, imitation and financial loss.
Beyond the waiver, LIPO has committed to provide hands-on technical support throughout the period, ensuring that institutions can navigate the registration process efficiently and effectively.
Participants welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that could redefine how sports organizations approach business development.
As part of a global observance, World Intellectual Property Day highlights the critical role IP plays in fostering creativity, encouraging innovation and driving economic growth across industries.
For Liberia, the focus on sports reflects a growing recognition of the sector’s untapped economic potential.
