The newly appointed and confirmed Supreme Court Chief justice, His Honor, Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay, Sr., officially took oath of office on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, in Monrovia at a very colorful ceremony.
In a bold declaration during the formal seating ceremony of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay, Sr., pledged to elevate the status of the country Judiciary, asserting it will no longer be treated as a “stepchild” of government or those with political power as it has been perceived in the past.
While delivering his remarks with conviction, Chief Justice Gbeisay outlined a vision rooted in results, integrity and reform. “I intend to talk less and do more or else test my resolve,” he stated, signaling a shift toward action-driven leadership.
Among the key initiatives announced was a sweeping reform of the Judiciary Monitoring and Evaluation Division (JM and ED). The revamped division will: Conduct inspections across all courts, evaluate judicial performance, and compile essential data on case management.
“This new dispensation will be robust,” Gbeisay accentuated, adding: “We will grade our judges based on performance. The Judiciary must no longer be a neglected branch of government.”
Also, acknowledging the challenges faced by judges, particularly low salaries and poor working conditions, Gbeisay said that support must be matched with responsibility. “There are many good judges who continue to make sacrifices, and we honor that,” he told the overwhelming gathering, predominately legal practitioners.
He promised that the days of “unchecked complacency and you know who am I, are over.”
Chief Justice Gbeisay also addressed the pressing issue of infrastructure, especially the lack of reliable electricity in rural courts. He announced plans to introduce solar energy solutions to bridge the gap and ensure consistent judicial operations across the country.
Before the presence of men and God during his induction ceremony, the inducted Chief Justice promised to keep the wings of the law wider like those of the eagles, while raising the height of the law over and above all.
We certainly hold Chief Justice Gbeisy by his word, and hope he and his team will independently drive the vehicle of the Supreme Court without fear of favor given that the court is established to remain supreme in all that’s legally feasible.
Let it be known that the height, relevance and dignity of any society are measured by the height, relevance and dignity of its governing law.
It’s legally disastrous for any nation and people whenever the law is politically reduced to the level of the floor rag and dragged in the mud thus losing its legal beauty and power.
Let the law remain the hope and protector of all, irrespective of backgrounds, given that justice is uniquely designed to be done onto all men.
Let not the floor of the Supreme Court be a platform where justice will be sold to the rich guys and powerful men as has been the case in the past, something which has and continues to contaminate the justice system.
We hope Chief Justice Gbeisay and team will wear the eyes of the eagles to thoroughly check the justice system, and weed out the bad apples therein.
