The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and funding from the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund, has commenced a three-day capacity-building workshop for 50 local government officials in Harper, Maryland County.
The training, held under the theme: “Strengthening Local Government through Integrity, Transparency and Accountability,” brings together participants from Grand Gedeh, River Gee, Maryland, Sinoe and Grand Kru counties.
The LACC said, the workshop aims to enhance participants’ understanding of ethical leadership, accountability, and transparency; key pillars in the fight against corruption and in promoting effective governance at the local level.
At the opening ceremony, Vice Executive Chairperson of the LACC, Ernest R. Hughes, underscored the importance of the initiative in advancing the Commission mission.
“Our purpose remains steadfast to advance the fight against corruption, strengthen local governance, enhance public service delivery, and foster a culture of integrity throughout the country,” said Mr. Hughes.
UNDP Project Manager, Trokon Bryant, reaffirmed the organization commitment to support governance reforms, and encouraged participants to make the most of the training.
“If you put your everything into this training, you will walk away with something meaningful,” Mr. Bryant said.
The ongoing exercise is part of a broader nationwide effort to empower local government officials with the knowledge and tools necessary to become champions of transparency, accountability, and good governance.
