Sweden’s Ambassador to Sierra Leone and Liberia, Karl Backéus, received a rousing welcome upon arrival in Maryland County on Monday, September 29, 2025.
When Amb. Backéus and entourage touched down at the Harper airfield, they were greeted by local officials, community leaders, and the joint security assigned in Southeast with excitements.
At a brief, but impactful address to the locals, Amb. Backéus reaffirmed Sweden’s longstanding commitment to Liberia, particularly in the areas of education, healthcare and community development.
He acknowledged the global economic challenges currently facing nations worldwide
Backéus assured Liberians that Sweden remains a steadfast development partner.
“Despite economic pressures globally, Sweden is determined to continue supporting Liberia’s key sectors, especially education and health, which are critical to sustainable development,” Amb. Backéus stated.
As part of his visit, Backéus also highlighted Sweden’s continued support to grassroots communities in Maryland County.
He provided an overview of the Blue Oceans Program, an initiative that promotes sustainable marine practices, environmental protection and economic opportunities for coastal communities.
In addition, he spoke of Sweden’s focus on empowering women and strengthening local communities.
“Women are the backbone of every society, and empowering them means empowering the future,” he said.
Backéus’ visit is part of broader efforts by the Swedish government to reinforce diplomatic, and development ties with Liberia’s Southeastern region.
His presence was met with appreciation by local authorities, who expressed optimism about deepening cooperation with the Swedish government.
The visit marks a significant step toward enhancing bilateral relations and strengthening Sweden’s development footprint in Liberia, particularly in rural and under-resourced areas.
