A group of women, who have remained resilient in Bong County, has appealed for financial and material support as they strive to rebuild their lives and create better opportunities for vulnerable families.
The women are said to have been “abandoned or divorced” from their legitimate relations.
Their appeal comes from the Tumaba Women Collaborative, a community-based organization the women established in 2021.
At present, the organization has approximately 60 active members operating in several communities, mainly in Suakoko District
The women claimed they they were abandoned by their husbands, and left with the sole responsibility of caring for their children and supporting their households.
The Founder and President of the organization, Madam Oretha Tokpah, said, the collaborative was formed out of a shared determination among women facing similar challenges in any part of the country.
Many members, have struggled to provide food, education, and other basic necessities for their children after being left on their own.
“We decided to come together and support one another through farming and other community activities,” Madam Tokpah told reporters.
The organization is primarily involved in lowland and upland farming, which serves as a key source of income and empowerment for the members.
Through these agricultural activities, the women have worked to achieve financial independence while contributing to food production in their communities.
However, Madam Tokpah said, the group’s efforts continue to be hampered by limited funding, inadequate farming tools, and the incomplete construction of a multi-purpose women’s center.
The center, she said, intends to serve as a hub for training, meetings, and skills development programs for ‘deserted women’ and other young people.
Despite the challenges, the Tumaba Women Collaborative, has continued to grow.
Beyond farming, the group also provides counseling and basic assistance to vulnerable youths, including some, who have lived on the streets.
The initiatives aim to promote self-confidence, responsibility, and community engagement among the young people.
Madam Tokpah has meanwhile, called to government institutions, local authorities, development partners, and well-meaning citizens to support the organization’s mission.
She believes that with increased assistance, the Tumaba Women Collaborative can empower more women, strengthen families, and make a lasting contribution to community development in Bong County.
