Members of the House of Representatives (HoR), have summoned the management of the National Transit Authority (NTA).
The Authority leadership are to appear before House’s Plenary on Monday, September 29, 2025, to provide a detailed explanation for the continued increase in transportation fares, particularly along the Monrovia-Southeast corridor.
The decision follows a formal communication from the Representative of Maryland County Electoral District #2, Anthony Williams, who raised concerns over the rising cost of bus fares.
The fares, Williams said, have surged from L$3,500 to L$5,500 in a relatively short period when government has considerably reduced prices of petroleum products.
In his communication addressed to the Speaker and Members of the House, Rep. Williams, highlighted the growing burden on commuters, especially students and low-income families, many of whom, he said, are now struggling to return to their counties ahead of the reopening of schools for the 2025/2026 academic year.
“This rapid escalation has become a major concern among commuters, especially students, who traveled to Monrovia for vacation and are now preparing to return to their respective counties for the reopening of schools.”
Citing the socio-economic strain on ordinary Liberians, Rep. Williams called on the NTA to clarify the rationale behind the fare increment and to inform the House whether any measures are being considered for the traveling public.
The House has acknowledged the urgency of the matter, and said the appearance of the NTA is critical to understand the current pricing model, and evaluate its impact on the population.
NTA’s management is expected to present a comprehensive report to Plenary on Monday, detailing the reasons for the fare hikes.
Also, the cost structure of inter-county operations, and any plans to stabilize or reduce transportation costs.
