Culture Amb. Kamara Charges Musicians Union
By Omari Jackson
Art and Culture Ambassador, Kekula Malawala Kamara, delivered a passionate and inspiring address on Friday, July 18, 2025- at the Accountability Lab Conference Hall on Carey Street, marking the official induction of the new leadership of the Liberia Musicians Union (LMU).
Amb. Kamara spoke to a room filled with musical legends, rising stars, cultural stakeholders, and invited dignitaries, when he emphasized that the moment was not just ceremonial, but a turning point for the creative future of the country.
“Your election is not just a vote of confidence—it is a national assignment,” Amb. Kamara declared, adding: “You have been entrusted with the soul of our sound, the rhythm of our identity, and the future of a profession that has echoed from the hinterlands of Lofa to the coastal towns of Grand Bassa.”
With warmth and urgency, Kamara called on the new leadership to usher in an era of discipline, unity, transparency, and visionary stewardship, rooted in the deep cultural wealth of the country’s musical traditions.
Music as the Pulse of the Nation
Amb. Kamara spoke powerfully about the central role music has played in the country’s story, from times of war to eras of recovery and national transformation.
“Music in this country has always been more than entertainment. It is our oral history. It is our resistance. It is our joy, our protest, our prayer.”
Kamara then challenged the Union to take up a renewed mission to protect artists’ rights, enforce copyright laws, bridge generational gaps, and partner with government and international allies to invest in talent and industry growth.
A Cultural Call to Action
He meanwhile, issued a stirring call for musicians to respect their craft, their audience, and their colleagues—and to be mindful of the messages they carry in their songs.
“Say no to music that degrades women or glorifies violence,” he urged, noting: “Say yes to songs that uplift, that challenge, that teach, that heal. Let your music be a light in these times.”
Commitment to Partnership
Amb. Kamara pledged his full support to the Union and the creative sector at large, not in a supervisory capacity, but as a partner and collaborator in the work of cultural empowerment.
“Let the LMU no longer be a house divided, but a stronghold of unity. Let our music not echo confusion, but resound with the promise of a proud, creative, and unstoppable people.”
Closing Blessings
Kamara yearned to invoke blessings for the country’s artists, for the Union, and for the nation, reminding all that when music thrives, the spirit of a people is preserved, celebrated, and elevated.
