Conflicting accounts have emerged into the death of a suspect, who police claimed, had inflicted wounds on them.
Police initial report said the man died on the accident scene, but later reported that the suspect was pronounced dead by doctors at JFK Medical Center.
On Wednesday, October 8, 2025, an officer of the Liberia National Police (LNP), fatally shot a suspect, identified as Matthew Mulbah, who reportedly stabbed three of his colleagues during a violent confrontation.
The deceased is reported to have worked for Kobasi (a local musician) prior to meeting ultimate end.
The incident, which sent nearby residents in all directions, according to report, occurred near the old Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission building in Congo Town, outside Monrovia.
According to Police Inspector General, Gregory O. W. Coleman, the incident happened at about 2:58 p.m. “after the LNP received a distress call reporting that an officer had been stabbed multiple times.”
Coleman said, three responding officers ordered the suspect to surrender, “but Suspect Mulbah ignored their commands, and charged at them with a cutlass, wounding a second officer in the arm as he tried to shield his head.”
“A third officer managed to seize the cutlass from the suspect, but the man (not named), pulled out a concealed knife from his trousers, stabbing the officer in the thigh, and attempted another strike toward his abdomen.”
Faced with what the police described as “immediate mortal danger,” one of the officers opened fire, killing the suspect instantly, and preventing further harm to his colleagues.
The injured officers and the suspect (deceased), according to Coleman, were rushed to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, where one officer remains in critical condition undergoing surgery.
“The suspect was pronounced dead after emergency treatment,” Coleman said of the suspect, who he claimed died on the scene of the incident.
Meanwhile, Mr. Coleman expressed condolences to the suspect family, and said, the LNP has launched a “full investigation into the incident.”
He urged calm and called for prayers for the wounded officers.
