WONGOSOL Wants Action Against Drugs Dealers

The Executive Director of the Women non-Governmental Organization Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL) Madam Esther Davis Yango wants government to take action against illicit drugs dealers.

Madam Yango said that illicit drugs are destroying the country’s youthful population on a daily basis.

“This requires concrete actions from government functionaries to tackle the fight against illicit drugs seriously,” Madam Yango said.

She made the statement on Thursday, August 7, 2025, when several Liberians and organizations staged a walk to the Capitol Building where they presented a petition to lawmakers.

Thursday’s walk was in solidarity against the spread of illicit drugs and substance abuse in the country.

Madam Yango said that the spread of illicit drugs and substance abuse have penetrated every community in the country, affecting mostly young people and severely impacting communities.

She wants government to put in place adequate measures to empower the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), ensuring that those who are facilitating the spread of illicit drugs into the country are arrested and prosecuted.

She believes that empowering the LDEA will go a long way to curtailing and eventually eliminating the spread of illicit drugs from taking a firm hold on the country.

WONGOSOL has been engaging and creating awareness on the fight against illicit drugs and substance abuse.

Madam Yango maintained that community dwellers should also help in the fight against illicit drugs, adding: “Government cannot be at every point in the community; but with the help of community dwellers, drugs peddlers will be exposed.”

She said the government of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai should ensure that the fight against illicit drugs is done with urgency.
