A tragic mudslide has claimed the life of a 37-year-old miner, Soko Smith.
The incident occurred at the Mombo Camp Two mining site in Klay District, Bomi County, late Sunday, October 26, 2025.
According to reports from Camp Master Julius Kerkulah, and General Field Manager, Alphonso Kollie, three miners Prince Daniel, Daniel Mehn, and Soko Smith, left the camp without authorization, and proceeded to the mining site. Moments later, tragedy struck when a section of the pit collapsed, trapping Soko Smith beneath the red earth.
Eyewitnesses say that Prince Daniel and Daniel Mehn, fled the scene immediately when they noticed that their colleague had been ‘buried’ beneath the debris.
Shortly the news spread, local authorities, including the police and community leaders, organized a night-long rescue effort until Monday morning when rescuers recovered the lifeless body of Soko Smith. Police and medical personnel confirmed his death, and convened a 15-man jury to examine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Following the jury investigation, police reported no foul play, and subsequently turned the body to the family for burial.
