A high-level delegation from Turkish Airlines has commenced a two-day technical assessment visit to the Roberts International Airport (RIA) in Margibi County.
The visit is part of preliminary engagements to begin flight operations in the country, a release has confirmed.
The visiting team representing Turkish Airlines, includes the Station Manager, Mr. Ahmet Uzunlu, Aviation Specialist Mr. Muhammet Duz, and another specialist, Mr. Aykut Akar.
According to Mr. Uzunlu, the delegation assessment focuses on aviation safety, security measures, and the operating systems of RIA’s facilities to ensure compliance with the airline international standards.
Established in 1933, Turkish Airlines is the national flag carrier of Türkiye, and one of the world largest, and most respected carriers, flying to over 340 destinations in more than 120 countries across six continents.
On behalf of the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) Management, the Deputy Managing Director for Operations, Honorable Egon M. Kuiah, described the visit as a “routine process in the aviation industry.”
Hob. Kuiah emphasized that such technical assessments are a standard prerequisite before the commencement of operations by any international carrier.
“This is a normal procedure in aviation. Once these formalities are concluded, Turkish Airlines is expected to resume normal operations, beginning with two weekly flights between Monrovia, Accra and Istanbul, Türkiye,” Hon. Kuah stated.
He further disclosed that within the next three months, the airline plans to introduce direct flights from Monrovia to Istanbul; a move expected to enhance regional and international connectivity.
Hon. Kuah also highlighted Liberia’s strategic geographic position, noting that the country serves as a key link between Africa, the Americas, and Latin America, making it an ideal transit and operational hub for global airlines.
He said the RIA is currently transitioning into the installation of 4th-generation aviation equipment, with the aim to strengthen safety, efficiency, and overall service delivery in line with international aviation standards.
The visit by the Turkish Airlines delegation marks a significant step toward expanding Liberia’s international air transport network, and promotes trade, tourism, and investment opportunities between Liberia and Türkiye.
