Protestors Want UL Campus Revamped

A group of protesters, believed to be students and supporters of the University of Liberia (UL), staged a dramatic demonstration early Monday morning, August 4, 2025, demanding the revamping of the main campus on Capitol Hill.

The protestors reportedly blocked the main thoroughfare in front of the university near the Capitol Building.

Some of them occasioned burning tires in the middle of the main street, thereby disrupting the normal flow of traffic. The situation also drew public attention to their demand for government to prioritize the renovation of the UL, instead of “an unnecessary focus on the renovation of the burned Capitol Building.”

The protestors chanted slogans and held placards with inscriptions that criticized national leaders for diverting essential resources to refurbish government offices, while neglecting the deteriorating conditions of the country’s premier public university.

“This is the people’s university! The classrooms are broken, the restrooms are horrible to the extent that students, especially the females are infected, and the library lacks materials,” one protester shouted.

“Why renovate the burned Capitol Building when we the students cannot comfortably sit in our classes due to lack of essential learning materials?”

Traffic was brought to a standstill as commuters and passersby watched the fiery scene unfolded.

Law enforcement officers later arrived and calmed the escalating tensions and restored order.

The demonstration highlights growing frustrations among the youth and student population regarding educational infrastructure and government priorities.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the protest up to press time late last night.
