Pleebo City Corporation Launches Cleanup, Beautification Exercise Ahead Of Festive Season

The Pleebo City Corporation (PCC) has launched a massive citywide cleanup and beautification campaign aimed at improving sanitation and restoring the city’s image ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays.

The exercise, which began earlier this week, involves the demolition of makeshift structures, the removal of abandoned vehicles, and the clearing of clogged drainages and street corners that have long been occupied by petty traders and scrap materials.

Speaking during the launch of the campaign, Pleebo City Mayor Larry G. Geekor said the initiative forms part of the city’s ongoing efforts to promote cleanliness, enhance public safety, and beautify Pleebo — Maryland County’s bustling commercial hub.

“We want Pleebo to reflect the true image of a growing and organized city,” Mayor Geekor said. “As we approach the festive season, the city corporation is committed to making our streets clean, safe, and attractive for both residents and visitors.”

Mayor Geekor called on residents, business owners, and transport operators to cooperate with the city authorities by maintaining cleanliness around their homes and business areas and by avoiding the illegal dumping of waste.

He warned that the PCC will not hesitate to enforce city ordinances against individuals who rebuild illegal structures or abandon vehicles along major streets after the current cleanup.

The mayor further disclosed that the beautification project will also include tree planting, painting of public structures, and rehabilitation of roadside gardens and markets in key areas across the city.

The initiative, he added, aligns with the national government’s broader effort to promote environmental hygiene and urban renewal across Liberia.

Residents have expressed mixed reactions to the exercise — while some welcomed the move as a long-overdue step toward restoring order and sanitation, others appealed to the city corporation to provide alternative spaces for small traders affected by the demolition.

The Pleebo City Corporation says the operation will continue throughout November and December to ensure the city is clean and well-prepared to welcome visitors and festivities during the holiday season.
