Jurry’s Gesture Boosts Volunteer Health Workers’ Morales

Representative P. Mike Jurry of Harper District, Maryland County, has appreciated volunteer health workers at the James Jenkins (J.J.) Dossen Memorial Hospital.

Jurry recently donated 100 bags of rice and medical scrubs to the facility.

The gesture follows his earlier donation of two 40-foot containers of medical supplies to the hospital, valued at approximately US$150,000.

The donation was made in response to a plea from the hospital’s administration, highlighting the challenges faced by volunteer nurses and midwives, who made up about 80 percent of the workforce.

Many have served for over 10 years without being placed on government payroll.

Dr. Shadrach Gono, Medical Director, expressed gratitude for the donation, noting that nurses and midwives handle about 70 percent of the healthcare services at the facility.

The director for nursing and midwifery, Charles Jasor, thanked Rep. Jurry for the donation.

Jasor too, appealed for expansion of the emergency room, better housing facilities for health workers, and other essential improvements.

Meanwhile, the volunteer health workers have extended their heartfelt gratitude to Rep. Jurry for his kind gesture, saying: “the donation will go a long way in boosting their morale and supporting their efforts.”

They promise to use the donation for its intended purpose, and appreciate his continued support to the hospital.
